  • Outputs of up to 400 kW for the development of ultra-fast charging infrastructure for passenger cars and heavy commercial vehicles in Europe
  • First pilot sites for megawatt charging of electric trucks to be established by 2024

The spread of electric vehicles in Europe is advancing at rapid pace – and so is the need for charging facilities. E.ON is therefore continuously investing in the construction of new, ultra-fast charging points throughout Europe. The energy company has now ordered 4,500 additional fast charging columns from the manufacturer alpitronic. They are to be used in customer projects and for public charging by 2025.

Patrick Lammers, member of the E.ON Board of Management, responsible for the customer solutions business:

“The energy transition in transport toward electric mobility is in full swing. Electric driving is easy, fun, saves CO2 and is becoming interesting for more and more people. At E.ON, we offer our customers everything they need to make the switch, both privately and for business. Our long-standing and successful partnership with alpitronic is a central element for this. It enables us to further promote the expansion of the European charging infrastructure and thus ensure more climate protection in transport.”

Philipp Senoner, CEO and co-founder of alpitronic, adds:

“A green turnaround in transport that is to succeed because it convinces end customers requires a dense network of reliable charging points. Our partnership with E.ON, which has grown over the years, makes this possible. As specialists in power electronics, our hypercharger product line provides the reliable, efficient, forward-looking solution for our partner E.ON in expanding the charging infrastructure throughout Europe.”

At least 15 million electric vehicles are to be registered in Germany by 2030. Europe's charging infrastructure must grow accordingly. E.ON has set itself the goal of helping to shape this growth and making it easier to charge e-vehicles in public places, at work and at home. With the 4,500 new fast-charging stations from alpitronic, E.ON will further expand its own charging network and help customers across Europe make the switch to electromobility.

The latest generation of alpitronic fast charging stations with outputs between 50 and 400 kW will be used. They cover a wide range of charging needs – from charging at the workplace or while shopping, to ultrafast charging on the highway, to megawatt charging for heavy commercial vehicles.

In addition to expanding the charging infrastructure, E.ON and alpitronic want to further improve the customer experience at the charging station. The focus here is on technically optimizing the interaction between the vehicle, the fast charging station and the billing system, as well as Plug&Charge. All new charging stations are equipped for ad-hoc charging via common credit, debit or giro card and thus meet the requirements of the new charging station ordinance (LSV) in Germany.

The partners are also pooling their expertise in the introduction of charging solutions for heavy commercial vehicles and future megawatt charging. The first pilot sites with current fast-charging infrastructure for trucks are to be established at various European locations by 2024. For its truck customers, E.ON is already securing capacities from upcoming alpitronic production lines at an early stage, which are specially tailored to charging heavy commercial vehicles in the depot or on the road.

alpitronic srl, based in Bolzano, Italy, is a tech company for the production of DC fast charging columns for e-vehicles in the power range between 50 kW and 400 kW. It was founded in 2009 as a start-up for the development of power electronic systems. After various development activities for the automotive as well as the industrial sector, the company launched the first fast charging pole in 2017. Since then, alpitronic srl has been involved in the development, production and commercialization of the products marketed under the hypercharger brand.
